annual report 2017-2018
This represents what I highlighted in this 10 hour/week role for the Annual Report.
Service Journey
Eight high school aged youth and two adults will travel together to the Arizona/Mexico Border this June. It has been over a year of fundraising, planning and preparing to be immersed into this learning opportunity. Our trip is organized in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice, which organizes immersion service and learning trips for youth across the country. Our youth have gone through a preparatory curriculum together on immigration policy and our place in it. Our youth will provide direct service to people affected by our broken immigration system. Join us to send them off during our June 3rd service. In the fall, the group will share reflections about what they have learned and experienced on their journey. We are so grateful for the ways in which the congregation has provided support for this trip!
Coming of Age
Eight middle school aged youth have been taking part in the Coming of Age program for the second year. It is again such a joy. Working closely with Nadine to run this program has been wonderful. I continue to deeply appreciate her. We hosted two weekend long events with the youth in addition to our weekly curriculum. Now that we are close to completing two times through our extensive and creative curriculum, I feel prepared to fully adapt it to make it our own. I will devote some of the summer to this project. This will formally record the ways in which we have adapted the curriculum to better fit our needs so that future leaders will be able to build of what we have learned along the way.
Youth Sunday
Each year I am more blown away by the ways in which the youth grow and create ever deeper, more innovative worship. This year is no exception. What made this year so unbelievably special, though, is that a large number of the youth shared deep personal stories of struggle with the congregation in a slam poem that they wrote collaboratively. This was an unbelievable treat to watch emerge.
Summer Seminary
One of our youth will attend Summer Seminary this summer in Chicago. We are providing a small grant to support her attendance. This gathering brings UU youth from across the country who are considering becoming a religious professional together to learn, grow and explore this possibility together. This youth has shown tremendous leadership and depth. We are so proud and excited about her journey to this exciting program!
Youth Group
In addition to all of the above excitement, we continued to meet regularly as a group for fellowship, connection, food and fun. As always, it is a joy to be with them. They have created such a cohesive, inclusive and loving community. They embody our values in such a real, tangible way. We went on several field trips and plan for several exciting gatherings off site this summer.
